Sofala Bay

Sofala Bay - WWF EAME 2004A large bay located in central Mozambique including the Sofala Bank close to Beira town. Approximately 11,900 km squared included.

Description

A large, shallow offshore bank with muddy and sandy substrate. The topography of the terrestrial area is characterised by sand dunes. The hydrography is characterised by a permanent gyre that provides fish eggs and larvae and other planktonic animals. An important area for fish and squid because the permanent gyre makes the area a centre for nutrient recycling. Comprises a unique ecosystem based on a river, ocean, and front interaction (or ROFi). An extensive and diverse mangrove forest provides important nursery habitat for many species. The dunes are possibly of importance as a habitat of high or unusual diversity. Important as a nursery ground for demersal and pelagic fish as gyre traps larvae and juveniles.
