Bajuni

Bajuni - WWF EAME 2004In southern Somalia close to the Kenyan border. Area covered is approximately 1,470 km squared.

Description

A series of islands forming a long barrier within which the water is shallow and calm. A variety of habitats exist, including mangroves and seagrass beds in the lagoon, with reef flats and corals fringing the islands. The biological features of parts of this system (e.g. coral reefs and seagrass beds) may be similar to those found in Kiunga (see Lamu Archipelago). The islands and beaches provide nesting sites for birds and turtles respectively. Also thought there may be a population of dugongs resident in the shallow lagoon area and nesting of Sooty terns on islands.
