Welcome to the website for the Eastern African Marine Ecoregion, the aim of this website is to provide you with information about the Eastern African Marine Ecoregion which extends along the coast from Somalia to northern South Africa, covering approxinmately 4,600 km. The East African Marine Ecoregion has been the subject of substantial discussions that have lead to the development of an ecoregional plan for the conservation and management of the regions coastal and marine resources which exhibit high levels of biodiversity, and provide livelihoods to a substantial human population.

This website describes the geographic scope of the Eastern African Marine Ecoregion. Connectivity within the region - via monsoons and currents, and general information on the abundent biodiversity to be found, including the threats that are posed to its continued existence. Also available, are information on ecoregion planning process, ecoregion action, and priority sites defined for conservation action.

21 priority sites are described, 15 of which have been targetted for action in phase one (2005 - 2009), and as such are linked to a 5 year National Action Plan. This means that you can read about the specific objectives and actions defined for 15 of the 21 priority sites pinpointed for action within the East African Marine Ecoregion.

Since its inception the collaborative venture of managing and conserving the Eastern African Marine Ecoregion has been building partnerships within the region, you will find details of partners on this website. You can also read about some of our successes and keep upto date with the ecoregion news and available publications.
